Sackville Intercultural Weekend
Sackville Celebrates Founding Cultures July 18th - 20th
Look at the Intercultural Weekend Program
Sackville, NB is hosting an event that celebrates the founding cultures of the region. This Intercultural Festival is designed to be both entertaining and educational. “For many of us, we live as good neighbours, but we don’t really know much about our neighbours heritage.” said Warren Maddox, Project Coordinator for Sackville’s Cultural Capitals 08 Project. “With this festival we are trying to provide opportunities for people to learn more about their neighbours. It is a terrific chance for all of us to see our landscape from the perspective of the Aboriginal community, or the Acadian community or the Anglo community.” continued Maddox.
The three day event will start with a show featuring the music of The Irish Descendants and Mary Jane Lamond at Brunton Auditorium on July 18th at 8:00 pm. There is no place with any deeper Irish roots than Newfoundland, and The Irish Descendants have captured the essence of the Music with their exquisitely produced, award-winning recordings, including a wide range from haunting ballads to high energy tapping reels. The Irish Descendants have released many critically acclaimed albums, were named Best Roots/Traditional Artists at the East Coast Music Awards, won a Juno Award, signed a world-wide record deal with a major label, received numerous gold records and sold out concerts right across Canada and the U.S.
Mary Jane Lamond is a knowledgeable, admired and reputable musician within the domestic and international world music market, a leader in the preservation of Celtic heritage, and an expert in Celtic culture and Gaelic music. She has earned several Juno and East Coast Music Award nominations and awards for her unique style that combines traditional Gaelic songs with modern musical arrangements.
On Saturday the 19th, the day begins with a landscape walk presented by noted historians, which will show what the landscape site meant to our three different cultures. After, Gilbert Sewell, a Mikmaq elder, will conduct a walk through the Sackville Waterfowl Park exploring medicinal plants used by First Nations people. Later on, Bertholet Charron will take the group along the shore of the Bay of Fundy just outside Sackville and discuss the relationship of the Acadian people to the Bay. Additionally, Festival by the Marsh’s Marsh Troup will perform a short play about Settlement in Sackville and there will be free admission into local museums including The Campbell Carriage Factory Museum and Boutlenhouse Heritage Center. Transportation will be provided and visitors can experience each event in order or join between events. There is no admission charged for any of the Saturday daytime events. Those interested are asked to meet at Boultenhouse Museum on Queens Road in Sackville on Saturday by 9:40 am.
Saturday evening, Live Bait Theatre will be performing their new play The Heart that Knows. This is a play set during Sackville’s Ship building era. Following Live Bait’s show, the day will end with an Acadian Fête with live Acadian music at Ducky’s Pub. On Sunday afternoon, visitors will be welcomed to Fort Folly First Nation’s Celebration of St. Anne’s Day to experience an Aboriginal celebration including ceremonial drumming and dancing. The event takes place at the Beaumont Church, twenty-two kilometres from Sackville near Beaumont/Pre D’en Haut Villages. Fort Beausejour in Aulac will also be open on Sunday to welcome guests and conduct tours.
