Artists Sandi Hartling & Amanda Dawn Christie at Struts

Friday, August 6th, 2010, All Day

Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre are proud to present the works of Sandi Hartling as curated by Mireille Eagan, and of international artist Amanda Dawn Christie until Saturday August 14th as part of 2010’s Living is Easy. The Living is Easy is a summer exhibition series featuring works by different members every two weeks.

Hartling’s artistic interests lie in the unseen history and sacred acts of everyday life. Her current show at Struts Gallery, titled Eat Work Sleep, reflects these interests through pieces such as the video installation A Ten Step Daily Guide to Leading a Ritually Fulfilling Lifestyle and through the piece Small Talk, a voice recording that, armed with a motion detector, regurgitates one side of a small talk conversation to unsuspecting passer-bys.

Eagan is a freelance curator based in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Eagan has a bachelor in art History from Mount Allison University, and a Masters in Art History from Concordia University in Montreal.

Christie is an interdisciplinary artist working in film, contemporary dance, photography and electroacoustic sound design. Her Living is Easy piece, titled Last Days of Snow/Last Days of Cinema, is a media installation about the current dwindle of analogue television broadcasts and of celluloid film projections. Last Days of Snow is a video documentation of Christie’s public performances, accompanied by a portable television that picks up snowy and static analogue television broadcasts, a feat that will be impossible within a year. Last Days of Cinema is a double projection of a footage shot in a 1921 Amsterdam movie theatre, and mourns the loss of celluloid film projection in the face of digital technologies.

There will be a mid-show reception for Christie’s Last Days of Snow/Last Days of Cinema on Tuesday August 10th at 8:00PM. All are welcome. Drop by Struts & Faucet during gallery hours to find out how you can interact with Hartling’s piece Blank Slate, and to pick up your own copy of A Ten step Guide to Leading a Ritually fulfilling Lifestyle.
