From 14 May to 29 August, the Owens Art Gallery is pleased to present a travelling retrospective exhibition of the work of Nova Scotian artist Tom Forrestall. Tom Forrestall: Paintings, Drawings, Writings, organized by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and curated by Tom Smart, showcases work from several decades of Forrestall’s career, including paintings in oil, watercolour, and egg tempera, with sketches and journal entries to supplement this work and deepen our understanding of his art practice.
Tom Forrestall graduated from the Fine Arts program at Mount Allison University in 1958, where he studied under notable artists Alex Colville, Lawren P. Harris, and Ted Pulford. Since then he has become one of the leading figures associated with painting in the Maritimes, and has shown his work in solo exhibitions at galleries across Canada and abroad.
In conjunction with Tom Forrestall: Paintings, Drawings, Writings, the Owens will mount a small companion exhibition spotlighting Forrestall as a Mount Allison BFA graduate. This will include works by Forrestall from the Owens’ collection, as well as works by his teachers at Mount Allison, tracing Forrestall’s artistic development and some of his influences.
Alongside these exhibitions, Tom Forrestall will be present at the Owens Art Gallery on Sunday 30 May at 3PM to give a talk illuminating his art practice. This event is free and all are welcome to attend.
