Brian McKenna was born in Canada and raised in Scotland and England. He received a multi-disciplinary Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music and Visual Art from the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, and a Masters of Fine Arts from the Sandberg Institute of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Through the materials of audio, video, and electronics, his work deals with the structure and transformation of time-based media. He currently maintains a studio practice in Amsterdam.
During his Open Studio residency at Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre, 7 Lorne Street, McKenna will explore the possibilities of tuned circuits techniques as applied to video transmission along the UHF band. With a combination of DIY radio-astronomy techniques, DIY broadcasting and video-synthesis, McKenna wishes to construct installations that respond to and mediate between external factors such as distant radio-objects, as well the movement people within the immediate vicinity.
