The Owens will present a major retrospective of work focusing on the final twenty years of the career of Canadian-born painter Walter Tandy Murch (1907-1967). The Spirit of Things is a traveling exhibition organized by the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa, Ontario, and is curated by Ihor Holubizky and Bill Jeffries.
Walter Tandy Murch is a unique figure in the world of still life painting. His paintings of machinery, electrical equipment, bricks, clocks, and broken dolls teeter between realism and abstraction. Examined out of their usual context, the objects that Murch’s paintings depict can develop a strangeness or an almost mythic presence; through rich layers of oil paint, Murch lends to these things a voice and a spirit, and carries the history of painting forward into the modern age.
Murch moved to New York in 1926, where his work came to be rooted in an acute sense of time and place; it was not until the 1940s, however, that he began to paint his characteristic still life compositions, which he continued to produce until his death. Filling two gallery spaces, The Spirit of Things primarily spans this latter period of Murch’s career and moves between his studio practice and the commissioned work that he carried out for books and magazines.
The Spirit of Things will be open to the public from 26 February to 18 April. Co-curator Ihor Holubizky will give a talk at the Owens on Monday 29 March at 7:30PM.
