Artist Talk - Kim Adams

On 3 March, the Owens Art Gallery welcomes Ontario-based sculptor Kim Adams to give a talk on his art practice, which has spanned more than 25 years.

Adams was born in Edmonton and received his MFA from the University of Victoria in 1979. His varied practice includes assemblages in different scales, sometimes in the form of small, surreal landscapes, and sometimes as large-scale works in the tradition of the ready-made. His sculptures often take the form of wildly inventive hybrids of homes and vehicles. Adams works with the structures and gadgets associated with suburban life; by altering typical hardware store and hobby shop products, he reveals the absurdities of the culture that consumes them.

Kim Adams will present his work as part of the Visiting Artist Programme titled Playing, a series co-sponsored by Mount Allison's Department of Fine Arts, The Owens Art Gallery, and Struts Gallery. The lecture series explores how various artists employ playfulness and humor as a method of cultural critique. Other artists in the series include Sarah Hartland-Rowe, Diane Borsato, Garry Neill Kennedy, Mathew Reichertz, and Julie Voyce. Playing is funded by a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts to the Department of Fine Arts at Mount Allison University.
