A performance of some unknown original Canadian music is set to take place in Sackville next week. On Wednesday, June 10, Mount Allison alumnus Henry Adam Svec will perform The CFL Sessions. The show begins at 8 p.m. in the Sackville Music Hall, the old theatre on Bridge Street. All are welcome to attend.
The original CFL Sessions were captured in the 1970s by the late Canadian folklorist Staunton R. Livingston. The tapes (of Canadian football players performing both original and traditional works) were housed in the National Archives of Canada until the summer of 2008, when they were discovered by resident folklorist Svec. Now, with the help of Sackville composer and part-time Mount Allison instructor WL Altman, Svec has transposed the rough, deteriorating recordings into lush and contemporary orchestrations.
Svec, Altman, D’Arcy Gray, and Mount Allison music professor Helen Pridmore will offer a special performance of the Sessions in Sackville. Also performing will be well-known local musicians Nathan Richards, and El Ron Maltan and the Dice.
Admission is $5 or pay-what-you-can. Come down and enjoy the beautiful acoustics of the Sackville Music Hall, while listening to a part of Canadian sports history!
